How to take care of your skin in winter: expert advice

What you need and don’t need in the cold

Neglecting special skin care in winter is the same as taking a walk without a coat and hat. The idea is bold, but fraught with harmful consequences for health.

As the season changes, not only the wardrobe and mood changes, but also the state of the skin, regardless of its type. Winter is frosty and windy. In such weather, sebaceous glands produce less subcutaneous fat, and in the conditions of dry air of heated rooms there is a sharp breach of the hydrolipid balance of the skin, the protective barrier is broken, the sensitivity becomes more acute. As a consequence, the skin begins to peel off, blush and cause discomfort – all these are signs of critical dehydration. In addition to external factors, there is an internal restructuring of the body, associated with seasonal hormonal fluctuations, which affects the metabolism of the skin. Such changes are difficult to ignore, so you should review your care program.

How should skincare be changed if you go on vacation to warm countries in winter?

Flights and climate change are stressful for the body in general and for the skin in particular. It means that the reasons for dehydration are much greater. There is also a threat of signs of fatigue on the face. Additional products, such as concentrates, will help to avoid trouble and provide a fresh, healthy look for your skin.

Which beauty products should be avoided in the cold?

It is necessary to put aside aggressive cleansing agents, means with the big content of ethyl alcohol, and also everything that provokes skin dryness, including strongly matting cosmetic products. However, in winter, you can not neglect sunscreens: frost is often accompanied by the sun, the ultraviolet rays of which do not lose their activity. Also, when reading the recommendations and tips, do not forget about individual features, closely monitor the “mood” of your skin and adjust the care program, following its needs.

How do changes in temperature and humidity affect the skin and how to help it?

Almost everybody has a problem with dry skin during cold weather. Temperature changes affect not only our health, but also our skin. Dehydration and peeling can be caused by frosty outdoor air, as well as by air heating and dry air conditioning in homes.

Which ingredients should I choose?

Snow or wind gusts can cause itching. Creams containing film-forming substances and antioxidants will help. To help your skin cope with dryness, you need to moisturise it. Ideally in the evening, after a bath or shower, when the skin is still wet. Any moisturizing cream with a comfortable texture will do. It is good if it contains natural oils, hyaluronic acid, silicones, small amounts of glycerin or sorbitol. Be careful: if you increase the moisture content of your skin, you are more likely to get frostbite. Therefore, it is not recommended to use intensively moisturizing creams that “lock” the water in the skin before entering the frost. We would also like to remind you that if the selected product has a gel base, it should be applied at least an hour before going outside.

What does a simple and effective home care system look like in winter?

Ideally, the care ritual should consist of at least three products. Firstly, it is a washing-up liquid that does not damage the protective barrier (preferably without alcohol and sulphates). Secondly, it is a moisturizing cream with film-forming substances, natural oils and antioxidants. Third, a night restoring agent such as a concentrate. Also in winter it is necessary to apply additional care. Moisturizing masks are recommended to do at least 2-3 times a week, as now the skin loses a lot of water.

Do I need special skin care in winter?

In winter, your skin is under constant cover. On the one hand, it is warm, but on the other hand, clothes can become a source of irritation. Skin loses moisture more quickly, and with it, it loses its healthy colour. The body’s skin care algorithm is the same as that of the face. But if you shower in the morning and evening, do not use shower gel every time – the skin does not need such intensive cleansing.

It will be great if you pay attention to the composition of your body care products. Let there be oils, vitamins and minerals. Use mild scrubs 1-2 times a week. Do not forget about the rule of 3 minutes: immediately  apply moisturizing cream after the water procedures, because when the skin is steamed and pores are expanded, the conductivity of useful components improves.
